These crystals are sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, a popular drug for erectile dysfunction (ED). The drug first came about in 1986 as researchers sought a treatment for hypertension disorders. Years later they switched focus to angina, and in one study they came to realize its efficacy for ED. Viagra was approved for use on March 27, 1998.
