The cause of a variety of infections that resemble the common cold, adenoviruses appear as round, red blobs in this colorized transmission electron micrograph. Genetic material is found in the core of each adenovirus (shown in green) and is surrounded by a protein coat (the red part). The viruses spread by invading cells and inserting their own DNA to replicate.
