Quick post today - but I thought I should give Etna its due. The volcano experienced its 15th paroxysm on September 28 and there are some great images and video for the eruption. The Osservatorio Etneo posted an update about the eruption and noted that this eruption was different in a number of ways: (1) the time since the last paroxysm was shorter than expected; (2) it was shorter and more explosive than previous paroxysms and (3) it produced lava from multiple vents in the Southeast Cone. All in all, the 15th paroxysm seemed to break the rules. The eruption produced some impressive fire fountains and lava flows (see below).

You can check out video of the event from BBC - in it you'll see the impressive fire fountains from the vent during the eruption, some as tall as 600-800 meters! (see above). Eruptions reader GeoRaving posted this little animated GIF of the eruption from a webcam set a distance from Etna - you can clearly see the lava flow extruding from the volcano. You can see more of the explosive nature of the eruption in some of these images by Marco Restivo. The viewers at home can keep an eye on the activity at Etna by looking at the variety of Etna webcams (see the great capture image below) - from INGV Catania and Etna Trekking. You can also watch the live tremor for Etna to look for the signs that an eruption might be in the works.
