Very brief update, but there is unconfirmed news from El Mundo in Spain that there might be a new submarine eruption going on 7 km off the coast of El Hierro in the Canary Islands in 500-2000 meters (reports are unclear) behind the ocean surface after months of increasing seismicity at the island. Tremor at the volcano had increased overnight (see above) on October 10, but most earthquakes at the volcano never seem to become shallower than 10-14 km (look for El Pinar on the list). However, a few earthquakes were within 1-3 km (although they were very small), suggesting that magma was/is closer to the surface. Spanish scientists are going to try to get some special undersea cameras out to El Hierro to confirm the activity and the island of El Hierro is on Yellow Alert status - and the government of the island is calling for calm from its residents. This eruption looks to be fairly benign in terms of threat to life and property, but very little is known about the nature of the eruption so far. UPDATE 7:30 AM EDT: Still no "official" word on the eruption, but a mayor in El Hierro has said a small eruption has occurred. Take that as you will without "official" IGN confirmation. UPDATE 11:30 AM EDT: PEVOLCA, through the Government of the Canaries, says there is "no certainty" about a possible submarine eruption at El Hierro. Helicopter flights over the area have not found evidence of any volcanic material, but seismic activity still suggests volcanic activity or magma movement. More updates as I find them (and if I have time).
