Answer: A stopwatch

This micrograph image shows the color-coded spring and gears of a mechanical stopwatch, a design now largely replaced by digital models. In 1962 astronaut John Glenn was wearing a Heuer stopwatch aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft when he became the first American to orbit Earth.
