Despite storms’ potential to leave a trail of destruction behind, excessive rainfall in unexpected places can sometimes reawaken dormant ecosystems and bring species back to landscapes they seemingly abandoned long ago.
In late March 2026, one such storm swept across Kahoʻolawe Island, just 6 miles off Maui, prompting staff overseeing the island’s restoration to report the surprising re-emergence of a prehistoric freshwater crustacean known as the “dinosaur shrimp,” alongside sightings of a rare and endangered bird and the temporary revival of long-dry wetlands.
Because Kahoʻolawe sits in the rain shadow of Maui’s Haleakalā volcano, it receives far less rainfall than most Hawaiian islands, making it the driest of the state’s main islands. Ancient Dinosaur Shrimp, Rare Birds, and Wetlands Reemerge
The most intriguing observation is the resurrected Triops longicaudatus, also known as dinosaur shrimp. Often described as a “living fossil,” the small, freshwater crustacean can remain dormant as eggs in dry lakebeds for many years before rainfall triggers them to hatch.

After the storms, the dinosaur shrimp were spotted in temporary pools at Lua ʻO Keālialalo, and are described as an immediate biological response to water returning to the long-parched wetlands. In April 2026, restoration staff also sighted the endangered Hawaiian coot, or ʻalae keʻokeʻo, at the same site, not usual for the island.
The black and white bird is native to Hawaiʻi and is listed as endangered at both the state and federal levels because it relies on freshwater and brackish wetlands for its survival. Its appearance in the newly revived wetland highlighted how even short-lived water systems can serve as critical refuge habitats when conditions allow, while also demonstrating the ecological worth of restoration work in the area.

Social Media Boosts Interest and Renaming of Crustacean
The news of the reawakened dinosaur shrimp shared online by field staff quickly spread across social media, sparking fascination and interest with the Triops’ unusual appearance and prehistoric origins. The renewed interest has also sparked plans for a formal Hawaiian naming process for Triops longicaudatus. According to KIRC, the effort will involve cultural practitioners, Hawaiian language experts, and restoration partners to develop an inoa Hawaiʻi, or Hawaiian name, that reflects both the species’ biology and its ecological significance within restored landscapes, while prioritizing cultural integrity and linguistic accuracy.
“As these species reappear in restored environments, we have the chance to better understand — and name — them within a Hawaiian cultural framework,” said Razo.

Building Both Ecological Resilience And Community Connection
The reawakened wetland is also tied to broader restoration efforts already underway on the island. KIRC is hoping to restore roughly 20 acres of upland wetland habitat through invasive species removal, replanting native vegetation and improving water retention to reduce erosion and strengthen habitats for native and migratory birds.
Overall, the sudden and unexpected appearance of dinosaur shrimp, the reawakened wetlands, and the rare sighting of the Hawaiian coot underscore how quickly ecosystems can react when water returns to the landscape.
