Conferences have long been an important part of the scientific landscape. They allow researchers to demonstrate their work, network with peers and other experts, and get feedback on specific problems. If nothing else, conferences can offer insights into important developments within the field. But as conferences have become more common, they are often moving online, into digital spaces.
There is, however, one annual conference that has resisted this trend. For over 75 years, Pittcon, North America’s largest laboratory science conference and exposition, has offered scientists and industry leaders a forum to address the persistent critical question: how do laboratories navigate the changes that shape practical science?
This has become increasingly pertinent at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability goals require new approaches to practice. Pittcon has demonstrated that it remains a vital space, bridging the gap between digital innovation and the realities of laboratory research. In particular, it offers face-to-face collaboration between scientists and the engineers behind the latest instruments.
Pittcon is a nonprofit that puts the majority of its revenue into funding local groups and supporting science education and outreach. It is also an ideal space for students and early-career scientists to meet their peers, gain career advice, and even meet mentors who can help them progress.
And in April 2027, Pittcon will be returning to the city of its birth, Pittsburgh, for the first time in 60 years. This reunion represents a significant moment in Pittcon’s history, as it fuses both its and the city’s scientific evolution into a single event.
Humble Origins of Pittcon
The first Pittcon (known as The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy) took place in Pittsburgh’s William Penn Hotel in February 1950. This event was aimed at a local audience, attracting around 800 attendees and 14 exhibitors. Over the next decade, the number of attendees grew as new laboratory technologies were developed. Aided by the post-war economic boom, Pittcon quickly became too large for the city to properly accommodate.
In 1968, Pittsburgh experienced a hotel workers’ strike, which forced Pittcon to relocate to Cleveland, where it stayed for just over a decade. After this, it began to travel across the country, hosted by cities such as Atlantic City, New Orleans, Chicago, Orlando, Atlanta, and elsewhere. At the same time, its scale expanded, gradually transforming into a world-leading scientific conference.
Although the event has traveled, Pittcon’s leadership has remained in Pittsburgh, where a small team of around 12 people and about 120 volunteers organize it each year.
What Pittcon Offers
Pittcon’s overall aim is to advance scientific endeavor through collaboration. This involves bringing together scientists, academics, innovators, students, and industrial specialists to share knowledge and ideas with one another. The exposition floor serves as a central point where companies can showcase the latest industry-shaping instruments and technologies. Here, engineers and technical experts can demonstrate how their products work, while attendees can seek targeted solutions to their laboratory challenges.
Stepping away from the exposition, Pittcon’s conference offers a diverse program of specialist talks, invited symposia, oral and poster presentations, and inaugural sessions led by scientific luminaries. In fact, Pittcon’s 2026 Wallace H. Coulter Keynote Lecture was provided by Professor Frances Arnold, the 2018 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. This opening talk demonstrated how scientists can use directed enzyme evolution and catalyst design to address challenges that were previously deemed too complex to solve.
Then there’s the short courses. Each year, over 100 different professional-quality classes are held during the conference covering everything from bioanalytics and energy to environmental science, food science, forensics, industry, life sciences, nanotechnology and materials science, and pharmaceuticals. It’s a valuable way to gain key insights or instruction on specific issues or techniques from people who know what they’re doing.
Aside from being places to keep up with new trends in the industry, conferences are also important hubs for career networking. Rather than being just a place for seasoned professionals and researchers, Pittcon is also an ideal space for students and early-career scientists to meet their peers, gain career advice, and even interview for roles with the world’s top scientific companies. Workshops, networking roundtables, and various social events provide attendees with a rare opportunity to discuss solutions with experts and to build professional bonds that can define careers.
How Pittcon Gives Back
One thing that makes Pittcon unique is that it is a nonprofit organization. Ninety percent of its annual net revenue is committed to fostering the future of science. Every year, over $750,000 is distributed across the world to support science education, providing grants (for research or equipment), scholarships, and internships for students, as well as awards for teachers and professors, and support to public science centers, libraries, and museums.
Their goal is to support the scientists of the future, and education is where that process starts.
2027 will be an unforgettable year for Pittcon, so why not join us there? Registration opens on Oct. 13, 2026. Come be part of the event that shapes the future of chemistry.
