The 2011 Pliny winner for Volcanic Event of the Year: Puyehue-Cordón Caulle. Image: NASA. The middle of December has arrived and only ~2 weeks are left before 2013 arrives (or 1 week until Apocalypse, if you're gullible). So, that means it is time to start voting for the 2012 Pliny! The Pliny is awarded to the top volcanic event of the year and although 2012 didn't sport much in the way of headline-grabbing giant eruptions, there are definitely plenty of events that should garner attention. The past Pliny winners include: 2009: Sarychev Peak2010: Eyjafjallajökull2011: Puyehue-Cordón Caulle You have leaf back through the year's post by heading to the main page and clicking numbers or arrows at the bottom. To cast your ballot, either send me an email (eruptionsblog at gmail) with your top 3 nominees for the 2012 Pliny, tweet them to me @eruptionsblog or leave a comment with the top 3 below. I'll tally the votes (MVP style, with 10 points for your #1, 5 points for #2 and 1 point for #3 - so order matters!) and announce the winner at the end of the month, along with releasing my 2012 Volcanic Year In Review.
