Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat that the body cannot produce on its own and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Types of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

There are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

  • EPA and DHA: Found predominantly in fish and fish oil supplements, EPA and DHA are often referred to as marine omega-3s. These long-chain fatty acids are highly beneficial for heart health, brain function, and inflammation regulation. They can also be found in algae, but in varying amounts, so you'll want to get a high quality algae oil if you're going down this route. As a result the best omega supplements will want to be mostly made up of DHA and EPA.

  • ALA: Primarily sourced from plants such as nuts, seeds, and oils, ALA is a short-chain omega-3 fatty acid. While ALA is still beneficial, the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA in the body is limited, high end estimates have it at 15%, whereas lower rates have it at 1.5%. This means that it is not functionally viable to get enough omega 3s from plant oils. Take for example a 200 calorie serving of walnuts has 2grams of ALA or 300mg of usable omega 3 at the high end, and 30mg at the low end estimate. Flax seed could possibly be more viable at 1.8 grams ALA per 40 calories, but again only at the high end. [1] Highlighting a need for omega supplements. Even at the high estimates you'd need far more than plant foods than a balanced diet and daily calorie intake would allow.
