OK. So I promised myself I would not blog about the baseball post-season play-offs (otherwise I could, and still very much run the risk, of boring you all to death). But tonight (that's St. Louis vs Houston in the National League Championship series) was just a spectacular example of, well of so many things. Anyone who thinks baseball is not exciting (see the comments on my previous post) should have watched this game. It just doesn't get any better than this. Of course, I can say that as my team won. I literally spent the night biting my nails, pacing the floor, and at times not even being able to watch, covering my face with my hands. There is something to be learned here. The message: never ever give up until the last out is played. This is true in life as well as in baseball. Tonight, my Cardinals were down 1-3 games in a best of 7 series. The winning team advances to the World Series, the loser watches the World Series on TV. Tonight, Houston took the lead, 4-2, late (7th inning) in a close game. It was the Cardinals' last chance to stay alive, their last at bat top of the 9th inning, and the first two batters were out (there are 3 outs/per team to an inning). Third batter gets a single after 2 strikes against him (3 strikes and the batter is out). Next batter walks. Next batter hits a home run and the game is won 5-4. The series of games will now continue in St. Louis and we will see who wins.....(I'm ordering a Pujols shirt and having it Fed-exed for good luck!). But, the real point here is to believe in yourself and your talent and to not give up. No matter how bad things may look, one can still win, even with 2 outs, nobody on base, in the 9th inning. Or with a bad budget year with your science being cut. Or with your project taking a bad turn. Or with being denied tenure and fighting it when things look hopeless. Or with, well, with so many of those things that happen to us in life. The ones that win are the ones that don't give up.
