1,500-Year-Old DNA Shows How Migration, Mixing, and Kinship Shaped Post-Roman Pannonia

Learn how ancient genomes from post-Roman Hungary reveal that northern Europeans moved into Pannonia without fully replacing local Roman-era communities.

Across seven cemeteries in what is now western Hungary, the graves looked remarkably similar. The same burial practices, the same kinds of objects left alongside the dead. From the outside, the communities that made them appeared to share a common culture. The DNA inside the bones told a different story at every site.

A new study published in Science analyzed ancient DNA from 314 people buried at those sites between the 3rd and 6th centuries C.E., a period when Roman authority was collapsing, and new groups were moving across Europe. Northern European populations moved into the region but did not replace the people already there. Instead, the two groups mixed, and what emerged was a stratified society in which certain family groups held power across multiple connected communities.

The researchers sequenced the genomes of people buried at the seven sites in the Little Hungarian Plain, near the Danube River. Two cemeteries dated to the late Roman period, and five to the 6th century, after Roman control had faded. The region, known in Roman times as Pannonia, sat at the frontier between the eastern and western halves of the empire, a crossroads for trade, migration, and military movement, which made it an ideal place to study what actually happened when Rome's grip loosened.

Alongside the DNA, the team analyzed isotopes from the skeletal remains, which can show us where people grew up and what they ate, and cross-referenced everything with what was found in the graves themselves.

Migration Did Not Mean Replacement

The genetic data showed a rise in northern European ancestry during the post-Roman period, which the researchers link to the historically documented movement of the Langobards, a Germanic-speaking group that passed through the region before eventually pushing further into Italy. But the local population didn't disappear. The cemeteries showed a blend of northern European and late Roman ancestry, suggesting the two groups lived alongside each other and intermarried rather than one displacing the other.

Burial practices and grave goods looked similar across the post-Roman cemeteries, as if the communities shared a common culture. But underneath that surface similarity, the family structures looked quite different from one cemetery to the next. Those kin groups appear to have been the building blocks of something larger. Rather than isolated communities living side by side, the evidence points to a network of linked settlements connected through family, culture, and politics, with certain groups likely controlling resources and maintaining ties across the region.

“The formation of the post-Roman Langobard polity was driven by the establishment of these hierarchical networks, connecting communities on cultural, political, and biological levels,” the authors write in their paper.

The empire fell, but the people didn't simply vanish or start over. New arrivals and existing inhabitants ended up building something together, and the graves they left behind suggest that the process was messier, more human, and more interesting than the story of a barbarian invasion has allowed.
